Congratulations to Dr. Kargarian

Dr. Mehdi Kargarian, a faculty member of the Faculty of Physics, has won the prestigious award of the International Center for Theoretical Physics Abdus Salam (ICTP) in Italy in 2020. This award is jointly given to him and Dr. D. Roy (from Raman Research Institute - Bangalore) is given. According to the ICTP report, this award has been given to Dr. Kargarian for his groundbreaking work on fractionalized topological insulators, weak Mott topological insulators, and crystalline topological Mott insulators. Topological insulators are a group of materials whose mass (inside) is non-conductive and its boundary is electrically conductive with discrete conductivity (quantized). The conductivity of these materials at their boundary is very stable and in a wide range independent of the details of the material in question, and therefore a topological phenomenon. Stable and discrete surface conductivity is one of the fundamental characteristics of these materials, because if we divide them into two halves, the two newly emerged surfaces at the border of the smaller pieces will be conductive like other existing surfaces. Split topological insulators are materials in which, in addition to the spin-orbital interaction of electrons, which is the driving force of their topological behavior, generally repulsive interactions between electrons also play an effective role in the occurrence of some of their behaviors. Also, weak topological opaque insulators and crystalline opaque insulators are another category of topological materials in which the stability of surface states can be predicted by assuming some additional symmetries in interacting systems. Dr. Kargarian is one of the first scientists who started research in the above fields and pointed out the role and importance of interaction in topological systems to the scientific community. Faculty of Physics sincerely congratulates Dr. Kargarian for winning this valuable award. https://www.ictp.it/about-ictp/prizes-awards/the-ictp-prize/the-prize-winners/ictp-prize-winners-2020.aspx
